May 9, 2018, the Hereditary Duke Friedrich of Württemberg, 56, was killed in a car crash on the highway between Ebenweiler (Baden-Württemberg) and Fronhofen (Rheinland-Pfalz).

He was the eldest son of Carl, Duke of Württemberg (born 1936), Head of the House of Württemberg, and his wife Duchess Diane, née Princess of Orléans (born 1940), a sister of Prince Henry VII, Count of Paris, Duke of France. Thus, the late Heir to the Württemberg Throne was a nephew of the Head of the Orléans branch of the Royal House of France.

In 1993, the Hereditary Duke Friedrich of Württemberg married Princess Marie of Wied (born 1973), and they had three children: Duke Wilhelm (born 1994), Duchess Marie Amelie (born 1996) and Duchess Sophie-Dorothea (born 1997). The newest Hereditary Duke of the Head of Württemberg House became the eldest son of the deceased - Duke Wilhelm of Württemberg.
