INFANTA LEONOR OF SPAIN RESEIVES THE ORDER OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE

January 30, 2018, in honor of his 50th birthday, King Felipe VI of Spain presented his elder daughter, Heir to the Spanish Throne, Infanta Leónor of Spain, Princess of Asturias, with the Order of the Golden Fleece, the highest order in the Kingdom of Spain.

The Order awarding ceremony was held in the Royal Palace of Madrid. Her Royal Highness, with a high award from Spain, was congratulated by the ex-King of Spain Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia - Infanta Leonora’s grandfather and grandmother, her mother Queen Letizia, sister Infanta Sofia and aunt, Infanta Elena of Spain.

The Order of the Golden Fleece is a dynastic order and one of the oldest and most prestigious awards of monarchical Europe. It was founded in 1430 by Prince Philip III the Good, Duke of Burgundy, on the day of his wedding with Princess Isabella of Portugal. Since the 18th century, the Order of the Golden Fleece has been both the highest award of the Spanish Royal House and the Austrian Imperial House, the Grand Master of the Spanish Order is the King of Spain Felipe VI, and Archduke Karl of Habsburg, Head of the House of Habsburg, is recognized as the Grand Master of the Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece.
